University Student Scholarships

A group of people at a French immersion program who received university student scholarships

Louisiana university students can apply for a CODOFIL scholarship to study French abroad in various countries. These university student scholarships provide you with the tools to take your French to the next level in an immersive experience in Canada, France or Belgium.

Requirements

All candidates must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident of the U.S.
  • Be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student (depending on the scholarship) at a public or private Louisiana college or university
  • Have a declared major in French Education or French Liberal Arts (exceptions: Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco and Coach Raymond Blanco Scholarship and Lions Club of France)
  • Have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 and at least a 2.75 GPA for French courses
  • Have completed a minimum of 13 or 15 hours* of university French by June 1, 2026
*If your university offers 3 credit hours for the beginner-level French courses, students must have completed a minimum of 13 hours of university French. If your university offers 5 credit hours for the beginner-level French courses, students must have completed a minimum of 15 hours of university French. Credit received from Advanced Placement Testing is counted toward credit requirements
  • Contact their departmental advisor, Study Abroad Office and Registrar’s Office at their university before applying for a CODOFIL scholarship to discuss the process for transfer credit

Required Application Materials

When submitting an application for a CODOFIL scholarship, a complete submission contains each of the following items:

  • Application form
  • Letter of motivation typed in French
  • Two letters of recommendation from your professors
  • Official university transcripts
  • ACTFL Advisory Oral Proficiency Interview results

Oral Proficiency Interview

Each scholarship requires participants to complete an oral proficency test. If you have completed an ACTFL Advisory Oral Proficiency Test (OPI), an ACTFL Official OPI or a DELF exam within the last 6 months, we will accept your results as part of your scholarship application. If you have not completed any of these tests, you can schedule an ACTFL Advisory OPI, based on the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, by contacting Jennifer Rodriguez at jrodriguez@crt.la.gov.

Official Transcripts

In order to complete your application, we need your official transcript from each university from which you graduated. The Registrar’s Office must send your transcript directly to Jennifer Rodriguez (jrodriguez@crt.la.gov) at CODOFIL for it to be considered an official transcript.

Transfer Credit

All Louisiana university students must meet with their advisor and the Study Abroad Office to inform them of their potential study abroad experience and to inquire about transfer credit. This must be done prior to submitting a CODOFIL scholarship application. If a student fails to comply, they risk being unable to obtain any transfer credit for their study abroad program.

Upon the successful completion of a scholarship program, participants will receive a certificate. It is the responsibility of the university students to present a copy of their certificate to the appropriate person at their university in regard to transfer credit. The student’s university in Louisiana will determine if transfer credit will be granted.

Important Information for Scholarship Recipients

For those who are offered a university student scholarship, there are important steps to be taken before starting an immersion program.

  • All scholarship recipients must officially accept their scholarship by completing required paperwork before any travel plans can be made.
  • A valid U.S. passport book (not a passport card) is needed for your travel abroad. Please apply for your passport book as soon as possible since it usually takes at least 6-8 weeks to receive it. For more information, visit the passport page of the U.S. Department of State.
  • All scholarship recipients are required to have travel insurance which must include health and repatriation insurance. The insurance coverage must be effective from the date you depart the U.S. through the date of your return to the U.S. Proof of insurance must be sent to CODOFIL prior to traveling abroad.
  • In the event that a scholarship recipient declines their scholarship after having accepted it and after having received scholarship funds, they must immediately return the funds to CODOFIL. CODOFIL will in turn forward the funds to the scholarship donor.
  • All scholarship recipients will be obligated to complete a program evaluation and submit it to CODOFIL by Friday, August 14, 2026.
