Gombo de Mots is a series of educational flashcards that demonstrates the richness of Louisiana’s languages. Each card in the deck features an illustration on one side and on the reverse the corresponding term in Louisiana French, International French, Louisiana Creole, and English. The series provides learners of French and Creole a way to enrich their vocabulary with lexical items unique to Louisiana.

The first version of Gombo de Mots features a deck of 52 vocabulary cards meant to encourage conversation and display the diversity of Louisiana French and Creole. You’ll learn words like un cocodrie (alligator), un ouaouaron (bullfrog), and un maringouin (mosquito).

The second version of Gombo de Mots launched in 2025, featuring 51 cards displaying unique words you’ll hear only in Louisiana, such as une plaquemine (persimmon) and un latanier (palmetto), which are derived from Indigenous languages from the region.
